Grids of the future: Addressing the barriers to large-scale transmission infrastructure

5 Dec

12:30-14:00 GST

Transmission session The IEA’s recent report on electricity grids highlighted the inadequacies of the world’s network as we move towards a decarbonized, digitalized and decentralized net zero energy future. In the next 15 years, we must rebuild or repurpose an 80 million km grid system that took us 100 years to develop, at a cumulative global investment of more than $20 trillion from now to 2050. What are the bottlenecks and how do we overcome them. This discussion will feature voices from across the electricity community to identify concrete steps towards realizing the needs of a net zero power system. Energy efficiency session The International Energy Agency’s net zero roadmap suggests we need to double the rate at which improve energy efficiency from 2.2% in 2022 to above 4% this decade. This doubling requires a tripling of current efficiency-related investment, from around USD600bn per year to 1.8 trillion. This panel discussion hosted by TAQA and its super ESCO, Abu Dhabi Energy Services, will bring global perspectives together to highlight the policies, technologies, and financial models needed to get our urban environments to net zero.
