The global shift towards renewable energy sources while imperative, presents multifaceted challenges to Global South nations. This panel seeks to delve deep into the consequences of these transformations on the Global South’s autonomy and agency over its development and natural resources - which are crucial to renewables infrastructure. Europe and United States’ historical economic interests in the Global South cast a long shadow. The panel will focus on control and agency to set equitable prices, sidestepping any remnants of exploitation. It will critically assess how the move to renewables risks being another form of economic or political dominance, or if it can pave the way for a more equitable and autonomous future for Global South nations, highlighting the nuanced interplay between environmental sustainability and political autonomy in an interconnected world.
