Forging Resilience: Anticipatory Action pathways to reduce loss, damage and Humanitarian Crises in the Horn of Africa

10 Dec

14:00-15:30 GST

Most of the adverse drivers of humanitarian crisis in the horn of Africa are climate related. More recently, Anticipatory Action (AA) approach has gained significant momentum in the Eastern Africa region, as a critical approach for pro-active disaster risk management in the region. This is owing to the region facing extreme and prolonged climate events, such as the recent extended flooding in South Sudan and the multi-season drought in the Horn of Africa, which caused millions of people to suffer from acute food insecurity, loss of livelihoods, displacement among other key impacts. These extreme climate events are interacting with other issues in the region such as conflict and macro-economics to increase the humanitarian caseload in the region, while on the other hand, funding is not at par with the increasing needs. All these challenges emphasize the need to shift from reactive response to a more pro-active risk management approach - Anticipatory Actions.
