Enabling the Early Retirement of Coal-fired Power Plants

Organizers: COP 28 Energy Team

The COP28 presidency reinforces the global urgency for the phasedown of coal consumption and production – which makes up ~25% of global emissions – and recognizes the financing gap needed to enable such. This initiative will convene and announce the latest & greatest work to accelerate the energy transition away from coal, specifically the launch of transition credits – a new carbon-market based solution to finance the early retirement of coal assets – backed by sovereign buyers in the Global North and coal-dependent countries in the Global South.
